Heat Metal

Main Page / House Rules / Heat Metal

The Target line of Heat Metal should be identical to the Target line of Chill Metal. They are clearly meant to be the same, but the wordings are different enough that specific cases can be found that work in one and not in the other. Since Chill Metal follows the general pattern of other spells, it’s Target line is retained.

The new Target line should read:

Metal equipment of one creature per two levels, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart; or 25 lb. of metal/level, none of which can be more than 30 ft. away from any of the rest

Compare to the original: “Metal equipment of one creature per two levels, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart; or 25 lb. of metal/level, all of which must be within a 30-ft. circle”

Key Differences:
  • The old version does not state whether it means radius or diameter. If radius (as all other spells that use a circle), this would allow 2 objects 60 feet apart (since no center point is specified), whereas Chill Metal would not.
  • If the old version meant a 30-foot diameter, it would not allow a equilateral triangle of 3 objects with 30-foot sides, which Chill Metal allows.
  • Chill Metal implicitly allows 3D distances, whereas the old Heat Metal explicitly limited to 2D distances FNAR (circle!=sphere or cylinder)
