Wings of Redemption

First Session

Alright, my spring break is coming up, so we should probably make plans for the first session of the campaign. For me, tomorrow (Friday) evening might work, or Monday-Friday next week. Tuesday/Thursday evening are out, and I’ll be visiting UCSC and UCB sometime during the week, so I’m not sure exactly when I’ll be available, but I’m sure we can work something out.

Chat software is up to you guys, I’m not too picky. I like text-based chat, for various reasons, but I’m fine with voice chat if that’s what you guys want.

I’ve also posted a link to the MapTool tutorials on the wiki. I don’t know if you want to play around with it now, or just wait until we actually start playing. Also, I’ll note that MapTool has built-in chat, if we want to see how that works.

Comments

I’m cool with anything. If we do IM (as in AOL), I need everyone’s screen names first – I have some rabid friends (and family), so I just block EVERYONE and then whitelist specifically who I want to chat with at that moment.

I’d be happy to try MapTool’s built in chat, too. It’d likely be insanely easier to only deal with one program, but OTOH I am more used to my AIM client and also I know it auto-saves full logs of chats, so we have a explicit record (which, if I do end up writing everything up book-style, would be crucial for me to have).

Now that I have started getting Asëa’s voice and speech patterns settled in my head, I am even more adamantly opposed to voice chat than I was before. She’s just… too much the anti-me.

As for free time, Fridays are good for me in general, this one is no exception. I am theoretically free any time after noon, but realistically any time after three unless we do email, and I’d need a concrete time beforehand so that I can schedule things like dinner, shower, etc, around it (My family still does the whole “everyone sits at the table and eats together” routine, so yeah). I really don’t want to do a general thursday night because that is going to be my homework crunch night, but I am actually free tonight til 10 (my self imposed bed time if I wish to be functional in my 8:00am class the next day)

Also, I’d like to run with the icons as is for this first one (boots, I’ll have yours done tonight or tomorrow by 3), because I really think the first encounter is going to be the “ok, well, now I see what works and what doesn’t” encounter, and I expect heavy changes. Ethan, I’m sorry, I have tried my darndest to force my computer to screw the images, but I just can’t get it to do it, and without a way to do local tests, it is hard to fix your problem.

Now that I have looked at my schedule more, I am really theoretically available after 3 mon, wed, fri, and all day sat and sun, which is odd. I thought my schedule was crap, but it actually ended up being pretty open. That said, except Fri and Sat, I am in bed by 10, 11 absolute max.

First Session

MapTool has a built-in message logging function as well. It doesn’t do it automatically, and it appears to save stuff in HTML format (just tried it), but it’s present nonetheless.

Female voices, btw, are actually one reason I have for preferring text chat. Sure, talking like a pirate is a lot more fun than typing like a pirate, but I’m pretty sure the female NPCs will outnumber the pirate NPCs. And I know from experience that trying to do a voice for a female (especially a female who’s quite unlike me, such as a damsel in distress) will likely either be unintentionally funny or will be ambiguous as to the sex of the speaker (we really have enough androgynous RPG villains to begin with, no need to add more).

Also, dylan, thank you for imposing a strict bedtime. I’ve got an absurdly early class, too, so I’m glad at least one other participant will be adamant about not running too late. I need to add Friday to the list of early-bedtime days, though, because I need to get up early for a volunteer job on Saturday.

First Session

Let’s do this Friday evening. The gang in SF will probably be gone by Saturday or Sunday.

So, is everyone else gonna have to download MapTool for ourselves? Sounds like that’s the best option, because I want my map updated often.

First Session

MapTool can be launched from the web, as long as you have Java 5 or higher. It’s a pretty small download, so overall it shouldn’t take much effort (if any) on your part to use.

The real benefit is that it will allow us to move our characters around on a grid in real-time, which has some HUGE implications (all good) for combat. I also think it’ll help with visualization, among other things.

First Session

It should be noted that when I said “3”, I really meant “3:30” on all counts. Grr, stupid train schedule changing. But I doubt that will make much difference to us.

First Session

I’m good…whenever. I’m the dude with the schedule that rocks right now, so whatever is good for you, is good for me, more or less.

First Session

So, maybe either try for before dinner (roughly 3:30-6, maybe), or after dinner (6:30 or 7 until… 9, for sleep purposes)? I’ll try and get a MapTool server up and running when I get home, and send you guys the info needed to get in. I guess we’ll see if either of those times work for everyone before starting the actual adventure. Oh, and dinner timing isn’t an issue for me – I’m due for a haircut tomorrow, and might try to rock climb at some point, but I’m personally fine eating in front of my computer. It’s largely for other peoples’ (dylan’s) sake that I’m assuming dinner runs from about 6-6:30.

Hmm, I guess I’ll give you guys the opening scene. This SHOULD get everyone to join up, considering all 3 groups of PCs have a do-gooder in them…

It is market day in Tinsville, and our protagonists are scattered throughout the town square, perusing the day’s goods. A man’s shouts suddenly pierce through the sound of the crowd, as he is seen running after a town guard. “Please, you must help me!”, he screams loudly. A sudden hush falls over the crowd, and the guard says calmly and forcefully, “No! I’m sorry, but we DO NOT have any spare guards to go chasing goblins in the forest! You might be able to enlist the help of some adventurers, but I do not know if any are in town today. Good day, sir!”. The guard then turns to walk away, leaving the man sobbing and begging for help at the guard’s heels.

First Session

Hmm, could work. Not sure exactly what Miithi’s reaction to that would be (going by my base understanding of raptorans, check it out from afar, though I could easily be ‘dragged’ in by Asea if we’re friends by then)

First Session

Yeah, Asëa’s will yank Miithi in to that one, methinks. Whether or not he’d let himself be led by an elf barely shoulder high on him is another matter entirely, of course.

Well, my dinner time is flexible, I just need to know in advance to tell my grandma, but am cool with either time.

First Session

trying to force greg to be free after 7 and before midnight is a pain, but I /think/ I managed it. <.<; As for Miithi being led, you would be his first friend outside of his flock (possibly his first real friend depending on how well they related during the days traveling) so its most likely he would follow. (The height thing really isn’t an issue since if you read my description of him, you know hes not exactly muscle-y)

First Session

also combined with the fact that Miithi wants to gather the strength to fly as quickly as possible, he would be willing to take on any challenge he can handle since he has no prior commitments (I am assuming the strength of goblins is fairly common knowledge here) though I am not sure how exactly one equates building wing strength with leveling up your sorcerer class lol.

First Session

When I get home, i’ll email you my very rough draft of their meeting for reference and see if you like the geneal idea. I wrote it from Miithi’s perspective because it was the more interesting one, but that means all the narration may need to change depending on his personality

And yeah, I know the height thing is no prob. Miithi is only actially like 30ish LBS heavier despite something like 7” difference in height. Mostly it is just a funny mental image :) Like… Like that scene in Haruhi when she drags Kyon.

First Session

Oh, the extra height in raptorans is mostly in the legs, so while it SEEMS like i should be a friggin’ rail, Miithi’s probably around the same as an elf, just with very long legs.

First Session

Yeah, tho Asëa is actually very tall for an elf, Elves are tiny! average of 5’? I doubt raptorians add a foot of leg (uh, wow, that sounded strange.)

First Session

well, their description is that they are tall and thin, with extra height (comparatively to humans) in their legs. So Raptoran = human + extra leg length, but Miithi is fairly thin for a human, I think of him as elf + extra leg length + normal human height difference lol

First Session

Alright, I THINK it should work now. I think the plan is to start now, and for me to get a haircut sometime after 7, which should give dylan time to eat dinner. Um… HOPEFULLY this works – I still haven’t heard ANYTHING from Will or Greg. But, we’ll see – and if not, at least we’ll know if the technology is functional.

Server name is “StonexusAdventure”, player password “wengale”, port 51234. I’ll send every a message, too, in case you check that more often.

First Session

well, lack of greg not failing aside, it went pretty well. Managed to get two goblins down to exactly 0 ho (lol) and one is going to run away when we get back. And I learned that my familiar has an innate ability to hit goblins in the crotch for 2 damage! huzzah!

First Session

Oh, so right. Asëa totally wants to not let the goblins die (especially the one that didn’t bludgeon Eruanna half to death). Granted, 0HP is kinda a tough place to be, as the Heal skill is useless and she isn’t going to burn a Cure Minor Wounds on them unless they are actually dying. But yeah, she’d totally help them as much as they will allow before trying to stab her (I’m fairly certain she can outrun them if they try to get away)

From a tactical perspective, not killing them might look good when gobbo three comes back with 50 more goblins :) Also, if either of them speak common, they might be useful unless the girl we are finding just springs out of the ground somewheres. If neither of them speak common, well, there’s still the principle of the thing: you don’t just kick a man when he’s down, even if that ‘man’ is a goblin.

That said, if anyone insists on killing them, Asëa is relatively easily distracted, just don’t make too much noise Coup de Grace-ing them :)

so yeah, in general, unless someone is being overtly evil, she will want to save even enemies before they die, so either kill (as in really kill, -10HP, not just dying) things before the encounter ends, or send her off to scout or something and make some story up about not being able to save them in time when she gets back (though don’t be too obvious. Easily distracted does not mean braindead). She’ll try not to save enemies to the point of them being able to effectively fight back again, but she’ll try to make sure no one dies that she can get to in time

First Session

Yeah, overall I think the situation went well for you guys. I’m not sure 0 hp is all that bad, though. Sure, they’re conscious, but their move speed is cut in half, and they can only take a single non-strenuous move action per round or they start dying.

First Session

No, I meant 0HP is a bad place to be from the perspective of Asëa trying to help them. They aren’t hurt ENOUGH for the Heal skill to do anything, nor are they hurt enough to make casting healing spells on them wise (if they were dying, then a cure minor wounds would at best get them to disabled, and either way stop them from dying, but at 0, even CMW gets them back to fully functional although at 1HP, but that’d enable them to run). So, the only kind of aid she can really offer is in the ‘not-killing-them’ department.

So, for them, it’s better than the alternative, but from the perspective of someone trying to help them just a little it’s a crappy place to be because there aren’t a lot of options.

Also, can you send me the message log? Mine crashed so often that I never could save more than a little :(

First Session

Also, is Eruanna way too damn good, or is it just me? I mean, with 3 attacks, she is going to have the most attacks til Flinn hits level 11!

First Session

Seems like her lack of hp will soon balance out her three attacks. I mean a goblin nearly ohko’d her with a crit, so soon the monsters will be able to do similar damage much more reliably.

First Session

On average, she’ll have 1 HP less than Miithi, per level Miithi gains (that is to say, when Miithi is level 20, she’ll be behind him by 20HP assuming average rolls), despite only having 13 HD. Granted, she gains levels in a funky stair-step pattern (2 HD per 3 levels for Asëa), but on average, she is only 1 HP per level behind Mithi (granted, he’s a sorc so not gonna hang out in combat very often, but still).

First Session

Plus she gets an average of almost +3 AC per 3 levels Asëa gains (I.e. approx +1 AC/level, but again, stairsteped), potentially getting her to AC 31 (by Asëa’s level 20), so even though she has less HP than Miithi, she’ll be harder to hit (in fact, the hardest to hit in the party, even after factoring magic armor into the equation!) and her AC does not stop growing (ever!), so in theory a high enough level druid could get an animal companion that NO ONE could EVER hit except on natural 20’s (or if the DM threw in a random strength 1 million monster just to get a hit in), at which point the fact that she has 2/3 the HD of the master completely stops mattering (at that point, your animal companion basically becomes Shedinja, you stop caring about the HP). Granted, you’d need to be insanely far into epic levels to get that kind of AC, but it is theoretically possible to make a nigh-invulnerable animal companion

First Session

On the same token, an attack based character of equally high level would have some method of ensuring a blow on your bird (and casters would have other methods of dealing with said bird)

First Session

Not necessarily. BAB caps at 20 tops, and epic bonus is +.5/level. feats and magic weapons can only get you so much more, and if you pretend that all monsters level up, they only get a bonus to hit every 8 levels if they push strength (so the long-term increase in attack bonus over time is 0.625/level). Whereas she gets +2 nat armor every 3 master levels, +1 dex every 3 master levels (so another +1 AC per 6 master levels), and +1 dex every 6 master levels (she pushes dex with ability scores since that helps her hit in melee AND pushes AC, two for 1!), for another +1 AC every 12 master levels (basically, +0.91 ac/level, which is > 0.625/level). So, in the long run (the mathematician in me is saying “as level approaches infinity”), her AC grows beyond the ability of monsters to hit it. In the “short term” that is standard levels, yes, stuff can hit her, but she’ll have the highest AC in the party probably fairly soon and will maintain that

Now, granted, it is theoretically possible to create a monster with any given strength you want, but my point is, her AC is on a more rapid increase than the attack of any creature that is also leveling up. I mean, there has to be some monster in the manual with the best bonus to hit (that is, the best published), and eventually she can get high enough that even it will only hit on 20s. True, there are plenty of spells out there to help, but remember that she’ll be getting friendly buffs, too, so I think magic is basically a wash (for anything that magic can do to aid the enemy, magic can go to defend her instead. Any direct damage magic can be covered for with healing spells). And for all I know, there is some like “amulet of armor” or “ring of armor” type small magic item that even a bird could readily wear/carry/whatever, so she isn’t necessarily limited to dex and nat armor bonuses, either! Heck, by high levels, she’ll have such insane strength (for a bird) that even some not-so-small items could be carried (“it could grip it by the husk!”), though I won’t do anything insane like try to get a blacksmith to forge plate mail for a bird, it has to be realistic.

First Session

Of course, even if everyone thought full plate for a bird would be awesome looking, it’d be a net decrease in AC because she gets a lot of her AC from DEX :)

First Session

well then, hows her will save? ;o

First Session

Yeah, there’s a CR 57 monster with, among other things,

  • 10 attacks/round against a Small creature
  • +73 melee or +55 ranged attack bonus
  • Regeneration 40 (and Fast Healing 50)
  • AC 70
  • > 1,000 HP
  • Damage Reduction 20/ good and epic and cold iron

And that’s only CR 57. Let’s assume that Eruanna’s AC = level + 10, and attack bonus = level (both might be a little high, but whatever). In order to dodge that monster’s attacks 50% of the time, you’d need to be level 84. That’s a lot higher than its CR, so of course you’d expect a large advantage. Even at level 93, when it finally takes a natural 20 to hit Eruanna, she still takes 2d6+20 damage every other turn, AND she would need good-aligned talons made of cold iron to make any mark on the monster. On top of it all, anything less than 50 damage is negated by Fast Healing (even if she does get through Regeneration).

Besides, at level 93, you’re powerful enough that straight up AC is the least of your concerns. At that level, I’m sure you’d be a LOT more worried about the wrath of God(s), or Epic spells that use Fortitude or Will saves.

In other words, I have my ways… The CR system will make sure of that ;-). Eruanna might look scary on paper, sure, but she’s nothing compared to a powerful Epic spell.

First Session

Pretty crap. Basically not worth mentioning. As an indication of how crappy it is, Devotion is a 50% increase in it. Lol, if you’re thinking what I think you’re thinking, that’d be kinda crappy. Luckily, Asëa will have so many spells to counter it that we needn’t be too scared of enemies taking her over and using the AC against us.

Her Ref Save gets to be nice (especially considering she is at 2/3s HD compared to the party), tho, since she’ll push DEX and with Evasion and later Improved Evasion at high level, this means she’ll not be taking much damage from anything that allows a ref save.

Its probably still too early, I’m just concerned looking at her projected level-by-level stats that she basically stays a surprisingly decent fighting force, especially given the insane synergy with all the druid spells (and Share Spells). I mean, heck, she could be Shapechange’d into an Old Dragon fer cryin’ out loud, with all the Ex and Su attacks and qualities (some rules issues to be ironed out, but Ethan will appreciate that I’ll save those). Heck, if she was willing to stay within 5 feet of Asëa, they could BOTH become Old Dragons with one 9th level spell. If Miithi takes that spell, too, boom, 3 Old Dragons in the party.

Also, random, but I quickly skimmed the monster manual: the only (non-epic) monsters with AC of 31 or higher are Angels, Demons, big scary Undead, old (and some mature) Dragons, and the Tarrasque and Titans. So yeah, not quite the group you’d expect to stick an eagle into in terms of AV (and she’d only be a few points behind those, too).

First Session

And yeah, I know that realistically she won’t be that great. I’m just concerned that she is (or will be) the hardest to hit in the party, currently has the potential to do the most melee damage in a round neglecting crits (and actually, also currently tied for the best attack bonus I think, so in theory is likely to cause the most damage at least at level 1), and looking at her advancement, she stays moderately competitive on most fronts. Her damage starts looking less and less impressive, but feats and magic can help there. Ironically she ends up more defensive than offensive.

as for good and cold iron talons, I think an Antimagic Field would be easier (Good and Cold Iron DR are Supernatural by default, so Antimagic Field kills them I think, since that monster doesn’t explicitly state that the DR isn’t Su? While epic spells get some help against AMF, I don’t see anything saying epic Su abilities get the same help). Granted, she’d still never actually cause damage, but she can Threaten it and therefore flank (crazy that you Threaten an enemy even if you don’t actually threaten it due to puny damage. And again, I raise my point about rules and english using the same words!).

First Session

lol, the way I see it, its more that a level one character is AS BAD AS AN EAGLE (with druid help) rather than that an eagle is as good as a level one character. She will get pretty tank-y but, then, so will some of our characters (who will have other things to help them there). The way I see it is she will be the best in the party early on, the most useful overall in middle levels, and decent AC/damage at late.

First Session

jesus ethan forgot to mention this:

Superior Multiweapon Fighting (Ex)

A hecatoncheires fights with a greatsword or a boulder in each hand. The hecatoncheires does not suffer an attack or damage penalty for attacking with one hundred weapons. However, the press of limbs prevents the creature from making iterative attacks with any of its arms, nor can it make more than ten attacks against a Small or smaller creature, fifteen attacks against a Medium-size creature, or twenty attacks against a Large creature in the same action (it can make all its attacks against a Huge or larger creature in one action). Skills

A hecatoncheires’ fifty heads give it a +50 racial bonus on Listen, Spot, and Search checks. Spell-Like Abilities

At will— greater magic weapon, fly, shield. Caster level 50th; save DC 17 + spell level. The DC is Charisma-based. Summon Hecatoncheires (Sp)

A hecatoncheires can summon one other hecatoncheires once per day, though is loath to do so because then it will be similarly obligated to answer its sibling’s summoning. A summoned hecatoncheires cannot use its summoning power while “summoned.” Abomination Traits

Immune to polymorphing, petrification, and other form-altering attacks; not subject to energy drain, ability drain, ability damage, or death from massive damage; immune to mind-affecting effects; fire resistance 20; cold resistance 20; nondetection; true seeing at will; blindsight 500 ft.; telepathy out to 1,000 ft.

First Session

True, level 1 characters do just suck that bad. But still. At level 1, all the druid help amounts to is share spells, link, and a free trick (but she isn’t maxed on natural ones yet anyway). She’s currently basically just a stock eagle that is easy to use spells on.

First Session

hmm, so if i’m interpreting the books correctly, those goblins earned (will earn? wink wink ethan ;P) us a whopping 60 exp each? D: only 43 more encounters to level 2? =x Or is it 300 exp each? that seems more accurate, but then it seems like we’re not accounting for the fact that there are five of us…_

First Session

Oh, speaking of XP, I know we agreed to not get it til a night’s rest, but I have a suggestion: Get the XP immediately (because we have such a delay between encounters and getting a chance to say “we sleep for the night”), but don’t actually LEVEL until a night of rest, even if you have the XP for it? The only change is that we see the XP sooner, but cannot do anything with it. That would also help if say 2 or 3 small encounters happened in one game-day but spread out over 3 or more real-time weeks. It is very easy for the first to get forgotten over that much time, but if we get the XP immediately we all have a record, and then not leveling til night. It might also save you some paperwork, Ethan – you don’t have to keep values around for a week or more before giving them to us, and I suspect none of us would not mind the extra paperwork since it’s XP (we are all a little like Belkar in that regard)

Another reason it’d help: If the party ever camps in the wild, since there seems to not really be any way to do “hourly watches” without totally screwing all the characters over in terms of rest, it seems like the best way to keep a nightly watch is to have one person stay up all night (see alternate idea below), but if the party did something like that and we get xp after a night’s sleep, that’d mean one person not getting the xp for an extra night. This way, they don’t level for an extra night (same as before) BUT at least everyone sees their xp at the same time (because splitting up when the players get XP would confuse EVERYONE).

alternate approach to keeping watch in the wild: Asëa trances early, say at 8PM. Rest of party stays up doing whatever, at least one awake til midnight. Asëa then takes the night watch while the party sleeps til at least 8AM. Everyone fully rested, and a pair of eyes (and eyes with good night vision at that) watching all night. The precise times are variable, just that she trances while everyone else is awake, and then she is awake all night while the others sleep.

First Session

Only 3 Old Dragons? I count at least 4, but then again, you’d also need to be at epic levels for that to work. And, um… MORE issues with polymorphing? Good lord! I knew the polymorph spells had issues, but I didn’t realize how many would come up…

Personally, I might classify Damage Reduction as a Natural Ability, which is a little-known miscellaneous category for anything that’s not Extraordinary, Supernatural or Spell-like. Either that or Extraordinary, like the Barbarian’s DR (and that monster’s Regeneration, for that matter!).

You guys will indeed get 60 exp each from the goblins, but it’s only 1,000 exp to 2nd level. I’m not sure where you’re getting 2,640 – that’s nearly to 3rd level! The exp awards are designed so that you get a level roughly every 13.3 encounters, assuming all your encounters are against equal-level (well, CR) monsters. With 5 of you, things might go a little bit slower, but if you’re worried about that I can always give you a few more high-CR encounters than I normally would.

I do actually intend to give you exp after every encounter, and then just have you sit on it until you had a chance to level up. Seems easier that way, and then you know immediately how much exp you got (always a fun thing). It’s just that I had to leave a little bit before the end of the encounter last time – you’ll get your exp once that last goblin is taken care of.

First Session

Unlikely I’ll grab shapechange, because my head will explode before I can choose my 9th level spell =(((( THEY’RE ALL TOO AWESOME T___T

First Session

Well, I forgot shapechange could also go to Miithi’s familiar. True, forgot about that caster level requirement (I read fast), but still, smaller dragons work.

as for damage reduction, while I agree with you wholeheartedly on that, the FAQ document from Wizards specifically says AMF clobbers damage reduction against good and silver (and cold iron is in the same category as silver in another one of the tables in the FAQ) but not things like bludgeoning or piercing. That said, we don’t have to obey the official FAQ, but I wasn’t just totally making that up.

But yeah, lots of rules issues with shapechanging an animal companion. Mostly, they are along the lines of “if they aren’t an animal anymore because their type changes, blah blah blah” where “blah blah blah” is any of the myriad animal companion things that are dependent on them being, y’know, animals (such as, for example, using the Handle Animal skill), or “how to deal with spells written assuming they are always cast on YOU, on someone else?”

Also, I do vote for more higher level fights. We’ve got two healers, neither of which is quite as good as a cleric, but combined they have greater healing than one cleric, plus as I keep mentioning, Eruanna is basically as good as a full party member (though due to funky stair-step leveling, her utility varies periodically with level). Plus a familiar (he did the most damage so far against the goblins, and more than all the actual player characters combined!).

And yeah, the sorc/wiz 9th level spells do rock. Still, I like all the druid spells far too much for my own good (also, getting them all = win).

Also, I thought you said that last goblin was gonna run. Well, we can prolly take him out in a round. Wanna just run that last round by email and/or right here? That way we don’t have to finish next time we all get together.

First Session

Eh, unless they want to actually bother SAYING what kind of ability DR is, I’d be inclined to put it in the same general category as Regeneration – which apparently means Extraordinary. Mostly I think if they cared that much about AMF turning off Demon/Devil Damage Reduction, they would’ve noted it as being Supernatural :-P.

Glad to hear that you’re up for tougher fights. That reminds me, I was kinda thinking that one should be… (goes off to change something)

Allowing him to run away would count as him being “taken care of”. I don’t know if this post is too crowded, and I don’t have Greg and Lowell’s email addresses. That being said, however, I’m fine with running it via email (or on here, if you guys think it’ll work). Do you have a preference for email, or on this site?

First Session

Doesn’t matter to me which (we can always start a new post if this one is painfully full). Might be easier here so that we don’t have to remember to hit “reply-all” to send our actions to everyone (plus PM goes to email w/o you needing to know the email so you can contact them). I mean, he’ll either get away or be downed in a round or two, so I think it’d work anywhere. And I doubt he’ll get away given that Miithi’s familiar can easily out pace him, and Eruanna can too, and between them they are responsible for 70% of the party damage already.

First Session

Only ‘cus my familiar apparently has a 100% crit rate against goblins lol (qq one damage)

First Session

Alrighty then. Combat, continued!

Goblin 2 (the healthy one) yells something at the other two, sounding a little scared. He then hurries away from the PCs, sticking close to the cliff wall. He winds up in a corner. (double-Move up and to the left)

The other two Goblins grumble under their breath, and both carefully stagger away from the PC engaging them. (5-foot step away)

It’s now Flinn’s turn. Given his likely action (attack the gobby?), he can reach the goblin from one of 3 spaces. One leaves a single empty square next to Goblin, diagonally to the left (farther from the PCs); another space leaves a single empty space diagonally to the goblin’s right (closer to the PCs); a third leaves an empty square right in front of the goblin, and another empty square diagonally to the goblin’s right. In any case, Flinn will flank the goblin.

(alright, is that all you need from me? while we’re at it, is there any way to get the chat log to Greg, and would that even help? oh yeah – screenshots available upon request)

First Session

OOC: I’ve got the chat log (sans smileys), you emailed it to me. I can send it to Nick, and he can forward it on. Also, why not just take a screenshot now and post it here (with grid showing plz), so that we can work from that?

Asëa has some talking out of turn order, preferably as soon as someone starts to look like they are going to kill/attack them (but late enough that if you WANT to kill them, you can always say it was too late to stay your blade):

“Wait, not kill them, yes? Maybe they take us… to girl. Maybe we follow him ((points @ running gobbo)), but maybe he runs somewhere else. Miithi, can Swii follow with Eruanna and we stay with them ((indicates the other two goblins))?”

OOC: Yeah, alas, Eruanna doesn’t have any tricks to “follow” (because there isn’t one), but if the Familiar goes, we can fake it by having her “Defend” the Familiar, and then the Familiar follows, and she sticks with Swii. And yes, Asëa is overly optimistic about her odds of actually communicating :)

OOC: I’ll pass on the info: I suggest Ethan makes a new post with a nice SS of the grid and possibly a short chatlog of what was last said (excluding OOC chat maybe? for greg’s sake)

I’m doin that right now. gimme a few minutes.

OOC: called lowell & left will a message on top of sending the chatlog to their emails.

My e-mail is bluemoon013@gmail.com so now you can bother me. Anyway, since it’s my turn…

Flinn: “I’ll corner the last one! Let the rest bleed it out!”

In response to Asea’s suggestion: “As if they can understand us! We’ll beat answers out of them!”

I choose to move where the goblin will be forced to move closer to the rest of the party. Attack! (Should I roll, or will you do it, Ethan?)

Brief summary (full chat log here but no images)

Basically, there was this guy who’s daughter was kidnapped by at least 9000(!) goblins. Or like 5. Maybe. But the town guards were being less than nice and didn’t want to help him.

Luckily, our intrepid adventurers were eavesdropping listening, and they all offered to help find the girl, Elizabeth. Despite the fact that the three groups (Miithi and Asëa, Flinn and Dice, and Boots) had never actually met, they were united by a common goal and so the minor differences of race (and drunkenness) were overlooked in the interest of helping save the poor girl from the foul goblins.

So, they walked to a nearby forest where the man said they had been gathering mushrooms, for he is an apothecary. A ridge split the forest, and Asëa’s friend Eruanna and Miithi’s familiar Swii took to the air to see which side of the ridge to follow. Within moments, the eagle shrieked overhead – something was below the ridge. Hurrying through the forest, Flinn hampered by his horse, the party came to a clearing. In the center, three goblins sat around a fire.

Asëa, hoping to retrieve the girl without any bloodshed, walked up to the goblins, the rest of the party hiding themselves in the trees. Unfortunately, between her poor grasp of Common and the goblin’s non-existant grasp of Common, the goblins advanced on her threateningly. As they did, they caught sight of some of the party members at the edge of the trees, and two of the goblins attacked her, the third moving towards the others.

Asëa’s natural grace let her dodge the goblin’s morningstars easily as Flinn charged his steed through the underbrush, advancing to save the elf maiden. Asëa, sad that violence could not be averted, stepped back and drew her bow as Eruanna rushed in to savage the goblin with talon and beak (or, just talon as the case may be). Dice and Boots advanced on the lone goblin, and Miithi sent a Magic Missile into the goblins near his friend Asëa, while his familiar harried the other goblin.

The goblins continued their attack, one hitting Eruanna squarely, knocking her out of the sky. Asëa rushed to her side, ignoring the other goblin even as it battered her savagely with its morningstar. As she clutched her fallen companion to her, she let her Healing magics flow through both of them. As Eruanna regained consiousness, she rushed the goblin that had nearly killed her, dropping it with her sharp talons. Dice, Boots, and Miithi’s Familiar Swii soon downed the other goblin, and the third, seeing his fellows on the verge of death, ran for his life….

(sorry, that is very Asëa-centric, but it was a pain to read the logs so I just worked from memory)

First Session

(+3 attack bonus, +2 Str bonus on damage and +2 flanking bonus NOT included, right?)

Displaying an unusual amount of agility for a creature trapped in a corner, the goblin attempts to dodge, but is just a little too slow to escape Flinn’s scythe! (8 damage)

The goblin collapses, bleeding profusely and breathing heavily!

(order: Boots -> (new round) -> Asea -> Dice -> Miithi -> goblins -> Flinn)

Looking over the message log, a roll of 14 missed earlier, and a 16 hit. Don’t need no monster manual, we’ve got old dice rolls!

First Session

I have to go to bed, so just in case my/Asëa’s round comes up before I wake up (I.e. before 5:30 AM tomorrow), I have emailed my (semi-speculative) next action to Ethan to play for me to save time. Ethan, if it doesn’t come up by then, I’ll play it myself when it does come up, but feel free to chuckle over her declared action :)

First Session

OOC: highly unlikely to happen as Will hasn’t gotten my calls (and never seems to check messages <_><)

First Session

OOC/off-topic: What is the general consensus on extra people joining now? It is possible I might be able to grab 1~3 more random people from other online places (we HAVE met irl however, just majority of our relationship is net-based). Our old guild forum (greg, lowell, and myself know what I’m talking about lol) is still up, if mostly dead, but I could put a thread there asking if anyone wants to join in our group, if the majority of us are up for it (ethan holding veto powah ofc lol) Idk if any have any D&D experience, but all have played RO and most WoW so they know general principals of the classes etc. Basically its a shot in the dark to up our party number and possibly grab some more interesting personalities lol, the downside is that their availability and knowledge of d&d is unknown, on top of the fact that our party is already large-ish.

First Session

I think we have enough trouble coordinating free time between the 6 of us, adding more might turn the merely difficult impossible, so if nothing else their addition should be contingent on matching free time to ours.

Other than that, I have no issues, though the encounters had better get really hard if the party gets up to 8 strong, coz otherwise we never level. ever. Plus, it’d get boring if we just went and double-teamed every enemy out there. I mean, I think 8 PCs is substantially more than twice as powerful as 4, probably more than twice as powerful as 5. Heck, probably each PC added roughly doubles the ability of the party to do crap, especially at low level.

That said, as a relative latecomer who joined coz you talked the others into it, I can’t really complain :)

First Session

I attack whatever enemies are left (if any). OR I go forward and stand somewhere near the front of the battle.

OOC: I prefer maptools, I dont check this enough to care what happens here. If I am unreachable by phone, assume that I attack whatever is hostile, or use myself to tank while flunky heals

First Session

OOC: lol yes lowell is a great healer >_>; also greg is off this friday so we can have meeting # 2 maybe?

First Session

I’m free from 3:30 fri for MapTool, but I can be on email/here from noon on, if there was substantial exposition that we wanted to deal with first, and I just got an AIM program for my iPhone, so we could do that too if other people want to start before 3:30. I just can’t get my computer on constant internet til 3:30

First Session

me, lowell, and will are all good after noon, 2, and noon respectively on friday (well will is off all day but he wont be up until noon 105% chance) So it is more or less all Ethan :o

First Session

Well, if you wanna get my attention, someone email me @ my mac email address (or PM me here, it goes there), I’ll be on more-or-less instantly (anything else has 15 minute lag on iPhone cries), though my typing is slower on my phone (so like, just a thousand words per second instead of a million, lol)

First Session

?

First Session

Boots/Will: you, uh, never recorded your equipment… Can you give the results of your attack and damage rolls please, or else put enough data in your character sheet that we can do it for you?

I’ll get to the other stuff in a little bit.

First Session

He’s using a warhammer, other than that i’m not sure

First Session

I see +1 Str, BAB 0 on his sheet. That means he cannot have Weapon Focus, so I’d go with a modifier of +1, and standard warhammer. Ideally, you’ll get an extreme enough roll that even if there is another +/- 1 or 2 in there, it won’t matter.

First Session

Ehhh, but weapon focus with deities’ favored weapon is a Favored Soul class ability at SOME LEVEL (not sure which) so we can’t rule that out atm. Lemme spam his cell >_>

First Session

offtopic but Ethan whats your pref. method of contact/your fastest?

First Session

Well, as I said, +/- 1 or 2 is negligible for 17 or 15 of the possible rolls :)

First Session

ok so wep focus is lvl 3, so for now its just 1d20+1.

First Session

COMBAT Boots rolls 19+1 = 20 on the attack roll. Hit! 1d8+1, rolled an 8, 9 points of damage. The goblin is clearly about to expire.

Dylan, unless you have a good reason not to, I say just use the rolls you emailed me.

First Session

STILL COMBAT Oh, and dylan pointed out that I implied one of the goblins was prone, so that guy didn’t get to take a 5-foot step (it WASN’T the one next to Boots, however).

First Session

Ok, continuing with my Action. I am going to use the rolls I emailed Ethan a few days ago, because the stuff that has happened is actually working right into my evil plan mwah ha ha ha about what I predicted.

Anywho, sorry to the other players, I am being purposefully vague with my declared actions, because at this point Asëa doesn’t know anyone but Miithi, so…. yeah. Nick, the rough draft of their meeting I sent you may contain a hint at what she is doing here, which is good because yours is the only character with any ideas. Ethan has the full rulesy version of her actions, with dice rolls, to make sure everything is kosher.

As Boots swings his hammer, Asëa calls out, slipping at the worst possible moment into elvish, «No, stop!» Boots, of course, hears nothing but gibberish and does nothing to slow his attack. (Oh, I’m using french quotes for elvish, any complaints?)

As for her actual Action, she hastily points behind her at the Goblin laying nearly at her feet, whistling three short, shrill bursts, and is answered by a loud shriek from Eruanna. She then runs (see my discussion of rules words versus standard english) over to the Goblin that Boots just laid low, dropping her bow at its side, and works frantically to stem the bleeding. After a few seconds, once the goblin seems unlikely to perish immediately, she raises her eyes to glare at Boots, her hands slick with the goblin’s blood. Remembering at the last instant to speak in Common, she fairly spits “You are healer?”

Meanwhile, Eruanna hops a few feet up (or possibly up-right, I forget where that Goblin was before it’s non-existent move), placing herself between the Goblin and Dice (in the square adjacent to, and to the right of, the Goblin) and turns to face Dice and Miithi, eying them fiercely. She half-spreads her wings, gives voice to another loud shriek, and stands, waiting. (Remember, this is no small bird we are talking about, she’s nearly three feet tall and she is making herself look as large as she can)

First Session

OOC: did that eagle just use an intimidate check? lol

First Session

Not quite, she isn’t that well trained. Mostly I was trying to give visual hints.

First Session

I’m fine with more people, provided that it doesn’t hinder play. I mean, getting 6 people together is hard enough, I can only imagine how bad it would be if we recruited additional players whose schedules simply don’t fit. Other than scheduling issues (and making sure the new recruits aren’t jerks :-P), I’m fine with adding a few more people. And yes, I will make sure to throw harder encounters at you guys if you’ve got a large party.

If you do want to get more people involved, this is a good time: we’re all still learning how this is gonna work, and the party is still pretty low-level. If you want to try, I say go for it, but encourage them to join sooner rather than later.

Friday should work out. I still don’t know exactly what I have to get done by Monday, but hopefully I won’t have to much to do. Personally, I like having a little bit of time to transition from being at school to being at home – start at 3:30 PM this Friday, then?

First Session

works for me. As for the other players…I doubt it’ll be worth the effort, considering schedules, lack of knowledge, party size, etc etc we’re probably fine with what we’ve got so long as everyone keeps showing up glares menacingly

First Session

good for me, too (obviously). The trains have been on time recently, so yeah (I just know I am going to regret saying that).

First Session

its the same thing with busses =(

First Session

whatever call me

First Session

How hard is it to remember 3:30? Also do you have maptools yet?

Also unrelated: Ethan what do you think the spellcraft DC would be to create this epic spell http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0639.html ? Something ridiculously high i’m imagining lol

First Session

lol, yeah one hell of a spell, also mega post ftw >_>;

First Session

Well, the radius of the earth is roughly 6,371.0 km, or 2.0902×107. feet. So…

Slay seed, base DC 25. +10 for changing from target to 20-foot radius. Cumulative +4 for each 100% increase in area, equivalent to multiplying the area by 2. divide by 20, need to multiply area by 1.0451×106.. log2(1.0451×106.) = 19.995, round up to 20. So +80 overall to get a large enough area (only 80? WOW…). +20 for one-action casting time. Current DC: 135.

Target specific kind of monster, no apparent saving throw allowed…

Let’s say +30 to save DC (should boost the DC high enough that only epic characters could survive, without a natural 20), so +60 to Spellcraft DC. Natural 20 not an automatic success, ad hoc x2 multiplier at a minimum (after all other factors). Target only extended family of a specific individual, x2 multiplier (two doublings does NOT equal a tripling, here). 195*4 DC…

I’d say the Spellcraft DC would be nearly 800, at a MINIMUM. You could add mitigating factors, but the none of those seem to be present, except possibly exp burn, which is limited to a -200 adjustment, for a net DC of 600. Yeah, that’s pretty darn high!

P.S.: bah… superscripts as an undocumented feature… Figuring out how they work was annoying (and non-obvious) enough that I’m tempted to call it a bug >.<. ESPECIALLY since the only solution I could figure out involved putting decimal points after my (integral!) exponents.

First Session

Oh yeah, I forgot that we get email alerts per post. Sorry, I was just annoyed at having random superscripts – would’ve used a wiki sandbox had I remembered about the email notifications >_>.

First Session

Dud, this post broke the time-space continuum. I was on the train, halfway home, with my wireless off (and there are no wireless networks there anyway). And then my newsreader gives me a “10 new messages” message. I’d think someone had hacked my computer, except that I have it locked down so much….. So, yeah, somehow these messages needed to alert me to their existence, and mere physical impediments like no wireless network and a powered off wireless card were as nothing.

Also, man, I edited Asëa’s page yesterday by linking basically everything to d20srd.org so that I can find rules fast on my iPhone, and I found so many bugs, I swear I must’ve edited her page 50 times in 10 minutes. I finally just settled for using mostly HTML tags. So, superscript would be tags. Assuming that this doesn’t strip them out that is.

First Session

blargh, that was supposed to say dude. WHY NO EDIT WHY? Oh, and no, it wasn’t my iPhone that got the messages. It always has a network. Somehow my LAPTOP got them, with no network within like 20 miles.
